I Don’t Do
I DON’T DO:
I don’t watch TV. Ever. I stoped when I was 20. I noticed that I couldn’t clearly recall what I watched the night before but the time was gone. I don’t own a TV and have never paid for cable. Waist of time and money.
I don’t follow news. All sensations that are meant to reach me - will - inevitably. Someone once said to me: ‘Michael Jackson died… 6 months ago… ‘ Well I traveled through Morocco the news didn’t reach me so close to the desert being current on so called events is overrated - hardly ever is there a good news. Need to know basis for me. Most of the time I don’t need to know.
I don’t listen to music. I listen to audiobooks and podcasts. Music and radio to me is a form of consuming sound and commercial entertainment. I am also quite happy to listen to silence. Also, I get tired of processing the emotional outpouring and endless chatter. Not my thing.
I don’t stress about sleep. If I can’t sleep - I can’t sleep. I often wake up in the middle of the night and thoughts are just spinning and twirling in this tight space of mind. And I let them. I don’t try to fall asleep, I don’t try to regulate it, I ignore it. Sometimes the only time we have to process something is in the dead of the night. I’ve figured a few pesky problems during nocturnal wakefulness.
I don’t consume sugar. No white, brown, natural, fake, even monk sugar is evil to me. Sugar sends dopamine system into overdrive and starts the chain of craving, urges, and afternoon dips. I limit fruit and other sources that contain sugar including root vegetables and flour containing products.
I don’t do any exécrais (Exercise!!!) I can’t even spell the word! I don’t do any of that regularly. I aim instead for NEAT UP - moving throughout the day. The routine where I take stairs, walk my dogs, park farther away, run around with kids, use stationary bike as a desk. I do play tennis, ride my bike, just started ballet, weigh training, swimming but nothing like rigid fitness schedule with time slots in my diary. I also follow furniture free movement. But that’s another story…
I don’t stop learning. Agggrrr a little beat up statement that almost reeks of state library. What I mean. I don’t stop learning formally. I seem to always be enrolled in one study or another. And be able to produce a valid student ID. Courses and trainings really are like hobbies to me. I’m doing a course in consumer credit to offer debt management to clients. Estate planning course to help with retirement planning. And of course ambulance medic training is happening too! Tennis, ballet, and figure skating lessons that’s just pure entertainment and I’m training a new dog (or more like she is training me). May it’s my way to engage into existential avoidance.
There are more things I don’t do. Not doing these keeps me (relatively) sane
I wonder what are things that you don’t do ?
